Southall Sustainability Practices
Southall integrates sustainability into every aspect of its operations, focusing on environmental stewardship, resource conservation, community engagement, and sustainable employment. By integrating cutting-edge technologies, time-tested agricultural practices, and innovative programs, Southall strives to create a model of sustainability that can inspire others while contributing to a healthier planet.

Sustainable Agriculture and Pollination Programs
Southall’s agricultural practices integrate sustainability at every step:
- Apple Orchard: With thousands of apple trees with dozens of varietals, Southall’s orchard balances productivity with biodiversity. Disease-resistant and climate-suited varieties, like Southern heirloom apples, are being introduced to reduce pest and disease pressures.
- Grafting Success: An in-house tree grafting program achieved a 77% success rate, ensuring better control over the orchard’s development.

Water Conservation Practices
“My passion for water conservation led to an early commitment that Southall would remain self-sufficient for irrigation, minimizing reliance on municipal water. I’m thrilled to share that Southall has achieved this goal, nurturing our crops and landscape through a sustainable cycle, turning to town water only when absolutely necessary.”
– Paul Mishkin

Energy Conservation Practices
The built environment can be a source of waste and inefficiency. Here at Southall, however, the signs of thoughtful conservation and stewardship abound as the farm leverages innovative technologies to reduce its energy footprint.

Forestry and Habitat Conservation
Southall’s forestry management efforts ensure the health of its hundreds of acres of land:
- Invasive Species Removal: Continuous maintenance eradicates invasive plants, while fallen trees are processed into firewood.
- Native Grasses: Over 30 acres of native grasses have been planted, providing habitat for pollinators and wildlife while restoring biodiversity.

Restoration Agricultural Practices
Southall integrates Mark Shepard’s principles of Restoration Agriculture to enhance its farming systems:
- Natural Ecosystems: Designing agricultural landscapes that emulate natural ecosystems can improve biodiversity and restore environmental health.
- Perennial Crops: Cultivating pecans, chestnuts, apples and other perennial plants suited to the local environment promote soil restoration and reduce erosion.

Operational Sustainability Practices
Our comprehensive sustainability strategy reflects a profound commitment to environmental stewardship, community support and innovation. By continually refining our practices and adopting forward-thinking solutions, Southall aspires to serve as a model for other organizations, demonstrating how sustainable efforts can drive positive change and foster a healthier planet – and create a sustainable future for people and the planet.

Employment Sustainability Practices
Southall is committed to sustainable employment by:
- Providing fair wages, job security, and career growth opportunities.
- Supporting work-life balance with flexible schedules, ample paid time off and holiday pay, even for part-time staff, as well as mental health resources and wellness concierge services.
- Creating green jobs that contribute to environmental sustainability and reducing waste in workplace practices.

Carbon Offset Contributions
Preliminary estimates suggest that Southall’s efforts offset hundreds of metric tons of CO2 annually, with ongoing initiatives expected to increase this figure in the future.
Through its various sustainability practices, Southall makes significant contributions to carbon offset. Key initiatives include:

Future Intentions
Starting in 2025, Southall will begin a soil improvement program by aerating lawns and the apple orchard and top dressing with compost to improve soil structure, retain moisture, and enhance nutrient availability. This effort includes overseeding with annual rye grass in the fall to generate roots as deep as six feet. The annual rye grass will die off in the spring and summer leaving deep channels for water and adding organic material in the soil. Using Southall’s own compost in the program, irrigation needs are projected to decrease by 30% in the first year and by 70% within three years.
Future building projects endeavor to integrate solar power and emerging technologies like Energy Vault, Forever Batteries, and composting units, which generate thermal electricity from organic waste and plastics. The goal is to reduce energy dependence and achieve greater carbon offsets.
- Introduce goats, sheep and other animals to maintain forest undergrowth and trails, reducing reliance on machinery.
- Expand native grass plantings to enhance biodiversity and carbon sequestration.
- Expand native bee breeding efforts and explore new species like leafcutter bees to improve pollination in greenhouses.
- Add hidden apiaries to increase honey production without impacting guest-facing operations.
- Develop grafting workshops and Orchard events to engage guests in sustainable practices.
- Install interpretive signage and self-guided tours on trails and at key sustainability sites to educate visitors about Southall’s conservation efforts.
